Brownsville, TX – This week, the Saint-Gobain Norton Abrasives plant in Brownsville marked its 50th anniversary serving the community and region as a manufacturer of cutting and grinding thin wheels used across a variety of industries. The plant has been a stalwart of Brownsville, employing over 100 people and supporting many local causes and organizations since it began operating in 1976.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, plant employees will participate in a Good360 Kitting event, which involves constructing 500 “welcome home” kits for local community members who are impacted by disasters or are involved in affordable housing programs. The plant is partnering with the United Way of Southern Cameron County to distribute the kits.
“Brownsville has been so welcoming to us over the past 50 years and we are proud to be able to be a part of what makes this community so special – not only because our plant is here, but because we live, work, and raise our families here,” said Sergio Mendez, Plant Manager. “I am looking forward to continuing our close partnerships with so many outstanding customers and organizations as we work together to strengthen and build our community over the next 50 years.”
The nearly 200,000 sq foot plant was opened as a part of Norton Company in 1976. It was part of the acquisition of Norton by Saint-Gobain in 1990, and has continued to be a key part of the organization supplying North America with thin wheels.
Beyond the Good360 kitting event, the plant has been a strong supporter of multiple local organizations over the years, including the Moody Clinic and Big Heroes, Inc.
