Position Summary

Under the direction of the Engineering & Reliability Manager, the Plant Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, development, specification, installation, repair, and modification of facilities, equipment, and machinery to increase production, improve quality, and reduce costs. This role applies engineering principles, theories, and concepts to improve manufacturing processes, products, and equipment while working collaboratively with internal teams, vendors, and contractors. The Plant Mechanical Engineer operates both independently and under the guidance of the Engineering & Reliability Manager.

Due to the diversity of projects, this position requires broad engineering knowledge, including:

  • Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation
  • Mechanical Systems
  • Hydraulic Systems

Key Responsibilities

Plant & Contractor Safety

  • Provide leadership to promote a strong safety culture for employees and contractors.
  • Develop, promote, and enforce uncompromising safety practices.
  • Maintain safety performance that exceeds industry standards.

Continuous Improvement & WCM

  • Design, develop, and implement innovative engineering solutions to improve manufacturing efficiency and profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate, local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Manage environmental audits, reporting, and corrective actions.
  • Support facility maintenance, utilities, and building care.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Plant Leadership Team regarding safety, quality, production, schedules, operational issues, and improvement opportunities.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in and/or lead World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects.

Capital Projects (CAPEX)

  • Design and develop innovative equipment and production machinery improvements.
  • Analyze capital equipment needs based on business requirements and emerging technologies.
  • Plan, manage, and implement capital projects.
  • Maintain and update technical documentation, including:
    • Equipment manuals
    • Machine drawings
    • P&IDs
    • Facility layouts
    • Spare parts documentation
  • Contribute to operational planning, budgeting, and capital planning processes.
  • Support achievement of operational goals related to:
    • On-time shipment performance
    • Labor productivity
    • World-class quality standards
    • Manufacturing cycle time improvements

 

IS THIS JOB FOR YOU?

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of mechanical engineering experience required.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience leading or supporting continuous improvement initiatives is preferred.

Certifications

  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification or higher preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical and non-technical information across all levels of the organization, including Engineering, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Finance, Sales, and Human Resources.
  • Process-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement, operational excellence, and efficiency.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present ideas, recommendations, and project updates clearly and professionally.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment while also operating independently with minimal supervision.
  • Positive attitude, high level of initiative, and enthusiasm for driving results and innovation.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
